A BMW driver made off after smashing into a bus stop and causing significant damage.

The incident happened shortly after 2pm on Sunday (February 19) afternoon when the driver of the silver Beemer collided with a bus stop on Romford Road in Stockton.

Significant damage was caused to the bus stop and the driver is said to have left the vehicle before making off from the scene.

Pictures from the scene show damage to the bus stop with the shelter’s metal frame bent and glass panelling partly missing.

Rubble was also strewn over the pavement, including part of the BMW’s bumper.

Extensive damage was also caused to the car, with its front right wheel turned in at a 90-degree angle and the front number plate hanging off.

Police have now launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward to assist their enquiries.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information should contact us on 101, quoting reference number 032680.”
