A man who bit a pet hamster’s head off has been jailed and banned from keeping animals for ten years.
Jamie Straugher, of Victoria Road, Darlington, pleaded guilty to one charge of causing suffering to a protected animal on Christmas Eve.
He was also charged with failing to surrender and failing to appear at court.

Straugher, 20, who appeared before Newton Aycliffe magistrates on Wednesday, admitted all of the offences and was jailed for 26 weeks.
Straugher was also given a ten-year disqualification order and is banned from owning, keeping, dealing or transporting animals.
He was also ordered to pay a court surcharge £154.
