Residents of a County Durham town have been left furious after elderly and vulnerable people in the community have been left ‘distressed’ over youths banging on windows and doors as police have issued a warning.
Police in Consett issued a warning over social media after increased incidents of youths banging on the windows and doors of elderly and vulnerable residents.
The incidents are happening specifically in the Delves Lane and Consett Town Centre areas.
Officers have appealed to parents to make their children aware “of the consequences of these actions.”
A spokesperson for Consett Police said: “It is unlikely the youths know anything about the persons living inside these properties and simply think its a bit of a laugh etc, however, these actions can have a significant effect on vulnerable people who can become scared and distressed easily by repeated loud bangs on their door or window.”

However, residents responded to the warning on social media with outrage over the incidents.
One person said: “ Good to see this post as I’m really concerned about my elderly mother who has been experiencing this all week and is terrified about what they will do next.
“They’re not just knocking on the door, but there is horrific language, throwing things at the window and even indecent exposure.
Another person added: “They are also doing it on the Blackhill estate down from Blackhill club, last time they cracked the plaster around my front window running so hard into it.

“They also bang on the front door so loud it frightens the dog.”
A spokesperson for Consett Police added: “Officers are carrying out extra patrols in these areas offering reassurance to residents whilst also conducting enquiries to identify those responsible.
“Any assistance from parents to re-enforce this message will be greatly appreciated, thanks.”
