Nestled in the middle of a roundabout in Newcastle’s City Centre is Purple Peacock – a swanky bar with singing, dancing and acrobatic shows. We went along to try it out.
Found in the middle of one of Newcastle’s most annoying roundabouts is Purple Peacock, a fancy bar with its very own shows.
The bar is in the 55 degrees development, right in the middle of the huge Swan House roundabout on the Newcastle side of the Tyne Bridge. I will forever think that whoever designed this part of Newcastle’s Central Motorway had a) never driven a car before and b) never been in a city before – the whole thing is a mess.

Annoying road configurations aside, Purple Peacock has taken over the former Fat Buddha site and now hosts its own glitzy shows.
Upon entry you climb the stairs up to the bar which has a lovely ambiance. The room itself is quite long and thin, and at one end a catwalk comes out from behind a curtain.
Here singers, dancers and acrobatic pole dancers come out to perform as you indulge in a cocktail.
The bar opens its doors three days a week Friday to Sunday to showcase their ‘must-see’ performances.
I visited on the first night of their new Friday show ‘Time of Our Lives’ which pays homage to some of the biggest movie musical numbers including Grease, Saturday Night Fever and Dirty Dancing.

I was impressed by Purple Peacock’s resident performers. The vocals were spot on, and luckily for the table next to me drowned out my shocking singing - sadly my singing voice very closely resembles a cat being strangled. One of the singers was so good we were almost convinced Perrie from Little Mix had taken on a new job.
The production is quality. There are outfit changes, lighting routines, and the choreography is spot on.
An acrobatic pole dancer had the room cricking their necks as she performed an ariel routine, and there was even fire eating.
We stayed away from the cocktails as I was driving, but those I saw being brought to tables looked impressive.
I had entered Purple Peacock a bit peckish having come from a day at work, but only found a drinks menu on the table.
I will admit that I didn’t quite understand whether you could get food or not, and after a Google still don’t really know. It appears that food must be pre-ordered, which to me suggests they’d rather you just have a drink.
I guess while performances are going on it’d be a bit difficult for wait staff to bring food to your table, although Ellen’s Stardust Diner in New York famously manages to have its wait staff sing, dance and serve you at the same time, so it’s certainly possible.
That said, if you’re planning a visit to Purple Peacock I’d recommend grabbing a bite to eat and then heading along to enjoy a drink while watching one of their shows. It makes for a completely different night out, and one which is sure to provide a talking point on the way home.
