Durham Constabluary has issued an appeal for information after a van driver was stopped on Grasmere Road in Ferryhill at around 11.45am on Friday, December 16.
The white Mercedes delivery van was stopped by a man on a red mountain bike, while an accomplice - who was also on a bike - searched the van at the rear.
The van driver got out and grappled with the first man, who is described as being around 5ft 7in tall, in his 20s and wearing a dark tracksuit, hoody and face covering.
The victim sustained a face injury during the altercation.
After the accomplice found nothing of value in the van, both assailants left the scene on their bikes.
