Wintry showers fell in parts of the North East overnight with the region waking to freezing temperatures on Thursday morning.
The Met Office is forecasting another very cold night under largely clear skies on with a widespread severe frost for many.
There is risk of ice forming near the coasts, after any daytime wintry showers, which will ease this evening (Thursday).
There is also the chance of a few freezing fog patches forming with a minimum temperature of -8 °C.
On Friday, it will remain very cold but largely dry with sunny spells, once any freezing fog patches slowly clear.
The Met Office predicts there will be cloud and winds increasing through the evening, with snow possible in the north overnight. Maximum temperature 2 °C.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
Cloudy on Saturday with outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow. Windy and becoming milder Sunday, with a period of snow turning to rain. Remaining windy Monday with further showers.
More snow is expected to move North East across the UK on Sunday, in most places lasting two to four hours before turning to rain.
