With widespread snow and ice across the region and multiple weather warnings in place, we've taken a look at when you can expect the current cold snap to come to an end in the North East*.

Snow has been falling across the region since last Thursday (December 8), and yesterday saw heavy fog over much of the region, making ice even more precarious.

Roads were busy, with traffic compounded by low visibility and train strikes - with directives issued to avoid travelling wherever possible.

*specific temperature predictions are taken from the Met Office's forecast for Darlington.

When will the cold snap end?

Much of the region is expected to see better weather conditions as we move towards the weekend, however, temperatures will remain below zero for the rest of today (December 14) and into tomorrow (December 15).

The Met Office has also warned that there may be a smattering of snow in some areas, such as Durham and Darlington; though climbing temperatures mean that it is unlikely to stick.

Despite temperatures will incrementally increase over the rest of the week, we will not see a dramatic change in conditions until the weekend.

Coming out of a freezing morning on Thursday (December 15), temperatures will reach a high of 3 degrees, and continue climbing until Monday (December 19), when temperatures will peak at a tropical 10 degrees.

Will the region see more snow?

Though warnings for snow and ice are in place across much of the North East and down into North Yorkshire,  dry weather will be the most prevalent meaning we are unlikely to see similar snowfall as last week.

Some regions will see a little snow, however, as we move towards Monday 19 (which is expected to see highs of 10 degrees), most of the snow that has settled in the region is to melt.

Are weather warnings still in place?

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across some areas until midnight tomorrow (December 15). The towns and cities impacted by the yellow weather warning include Newcastle, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Amble.

Flood warnings have also been put in place for parts of the country, as snow and ice melts. Flooding is expected in Parham Beck at Carlisle.
