The Sunday Times has released its school guide of 2023, finding which UK schools are the highest-achieving.
A number of North East schools got a spot on the list, including Durham Johnston Comprehensive School and the Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham.
The results are determined by the average percentage of examinations gaining A* to B grades at A-level and with an average percentage of 9-7 for GCSE.
The 30th edition of the Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide helps parents compare the performance of schools with others in the local area so they can see which are the best performing.
The top 10 state secondary schools in the North East
Durham Johnston Comprehensive School was named The Sunday Times Northeast Secondary School of the Year.
Results from the school proved particularly impressive given the profile of the intake with students from disadvantaged backgrounds, more than 50 nationalities and a diverse ability range, according to The Sunday Times.
The top 10 independent secondary schools in the North East
The Royal Grammar School, Newcastle upon Tyne, won The Sunday Times Independent Secondary School of the Year for Academic Performance in the Northeast award.
Helen Davies, the editor of The Sunday Times Parent Power guide, said: "League tables are not the only criteria a parent can use when choosing a school, but they are a good starting point. We want to celebrate excellence.
"We want to champion schools that are doing wonderful work. We want our children to be well-nurtured and well-taught."
