A man who died on a North East street has been named by police investigating the fatal incident. 

Officers were called to a report of windows being smashed at a property on Samphire Street in Port Clarence at around 9.15pm on November 28 and that a 61-year-old man had collapsed outside of the property. 

The man passed away in hospital last Wednesday (November 30).

Six males and one female had been arrested in connection with the incident.

All seven have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

On Monday (December 5), Cleveland Police have named the man who died as 61 year old Brian Gatley, who lived in Port Clarence was taken from Samphire Street to hospital where he died.

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Our thoughts are with Mr Gatley’s family at this extremely difficult time.

"Enquiries into two alleged incidents - which happened shortly before Mr Gatley was discovered in the street and which are currently being treated as linked - are ongoing and a number of people have been arrested by detectives from our Homicide and Major Enquiry Team."
