A number of passers-by took jewellery from the scene after a man allegedly burgled a North East store before being detained by staff and customers.
Officers were called to reports of an altercation outside of Gold Factors jewellers on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough at around 3.45pm.
As they arrived a man had been detained by staff and customers from the jewellers and from nearby stores after allegedly stealing a large quantity of gold and silver jewellery.
A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and he remains in police custody to be questioned.
Most of the jewellery was retrieved at the scene, however, some items were taken from passing members of the public who then left the scene.
Police are appealing for those items to be returned.
