The North East was met with fog and freezing temperatures this morning as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning.

The Met Office has today (November 29) issued a yellow weather warning for fog and mist, as many awoke to temperatures of -1C.

According to the body, this will slowly clear up throughout the day into low cloud and there will be some brighter spells in certain areas, with a maximum temperature of 7C.

The Met Office has warned residents to expect more fog, mist and cold as temperatures hit -1C again tonight, with frost possible in some places, especially over western hills.

The Northern Echo:

Meanwhile, they said rural areas where fog persists will remain chilly throughout the day.

They said mist and fog will quickly reform after dusk, becoming more dense in places overnight.

Adding to this, all areas across the North East will be subject to light winds.

Alongside the RAC and National Highways, the Met Office has released guidance for road users to avoid accidents in these conditions.

They have urged thos driving to familiarise themselves with their fog lights, not to use full beams, leave space between cars when driving, and to properly demist their windscreens.

They have also recommended drivers keep their windows rolled down at junctions and crossroads if visibilty is limited, to keep an ear out for cars.

In response to this weather warning, Durham Police have urged drivers to take safety precautions when travelling on roads.

They have advised motorists to reduce their speed, use dipped headlights, wipers and demisters, use fog lights when necessary, beware of other drivers not using headlights, and only to drive as fast as conditions allow.

Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, and Darlington. Parts of North Yorkshire, including York and Ripon are under a yellow weather warning for fog.

Residents can expect low cloud, mist and fog on Wednesday, which will be slow to clear and persist in certain places. 

Bright spells across most of the North East will be brief, and most will likely be in western areas.

The mist and fog will continue through the week until Saturday, which is expected to be murky with the odd shower.
