Officers from Durham Police are looking into reports of the incident, which happened at around 8.15pm on October 27 on Station Road in Seaham.
The man is said to have been walking opposite Kestrel Store in the seaside town when he was approached by four men walking on the same street.

The victim, a 39-year-old man, is then said to have been attacked by the four men in a suspected unprovoked assault.
During the incident, the victim sustained injuries to his face and has since lost the sight in one of his eyes.
An investigation is ongoing but officers want to speak to anyone who might have been in the area at the time, specifically two women and another man who were seen walking along the road and several vehicles including a potential taxi that were seen passing just beforehand.
