The Teesside skyline changed forever this morning after the Redcar Blast Furnace was demolished.
The structure, which has towered over the region for more than 40 years, was brought down in a controlled explosion just after 9am.
Redcar blast furnace demolition LIVE: Iconic industrial landmark brought down
The structures fell, roughly, in a westerly direction – away from the coast. The demolition itself took between five and ten seconds.
Thompsons of Prudhoe have spent months preparing and cleaning the site. The four enormous gas stoves which heated the furnace are set to be demolished separately in the next month.
Here is the moment that the iconic structure came down:
A 250-metre exclusion zone was in place for the demolition. Access along Gare Road will be closed for the demolition from 8am until after the demolition.
Roughly five to six minutes before the demolition, a single air horn sounded for 10 seconds.
Another horn sounded 20 seconds before the demolition takes place.
