A retired County Durham couple have been left hospitalised after burglars broke into their home and made off with cash and jewellery.
Police were called to Brunel Street in Ferryhill shortly before 7pm on Monday (November 21) evening to reports of a burglary.
It’s understood the suspects broke into a home on the street and removed a substantial amount of cash and jewellery before making off from the scene.

Both occupants inside the address were taken to hospital with injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing ‘six or seven’ police cars and an ambulance at the scene.
Part of the street was cordoned off while officers carried out their investigations.
One resident, who did not want to be named, told The Northern Echo: “Everybody on the street’s worried to death now. It used to be quite a quiet area.”
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed the two residents, who The Northern Echo understand to be a retired couple, were taken to hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “We received a call at 6.58pm last night to reports of an incident at a private address in the Ferryhill area.
“We dispatched one specialist paramedic and took two patients to hospital for further treatment.”
Durham Police added that enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
