A trainee police officer’s career could be completely derailed as he faces a catalogue of allegations of sexist, sexual and misogynistic behaviour.

The officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, thrust his groin into the bottom of a female training during a training exercise as well as picking her up carrying her around despite her telling him to put her down.

He is facing 16 allegations about his sexualised behaviour over a six-week training period.

He is accused of behaving inappropriately towards female students who were taking part in training under the officer between September and October 2020.

Another trainee officer reported him after telling her that he liked to be woken up with a sex act on a morning.

A Cleveland Police disciplinary panel heard how the officer’s behaviour became increasingly sexualised as their training process continued.

Stephen Morley, representing the police force, took the first female officer through her evidence this morning (Monday, November 21).

At times fighting back tears, she told the independent panel how she was left feeling very upset when he positioned himself behind and rubbed his groin into her during the self-defence training exercise.

She said: “I just wanted it to stop because I was shouting stop, they thought I was just engaging in the training and he wouldn’t stop. That was the scariest part – he just wouldn’t stop.

“I wanted it to stop but it just didn’t.”

The officer said she told other trainees about her experiences and they decided his behaviour needed reporting to a more senior officer.

Mr Morley outlined the case against the trainee officer at the start of the gross misconduct hearing, which is expected to last a few days detailing the allegations made by three female officers.

He said the officer made a comment suggesting that a second trainee officer was going to use a ‘vibrator’ when she got home.

The accused officer also made a number of sexualised comments about her having a ‘sexy nurse outfit’ at home.

Guy Ladenberg, representing the accused officer, said his client was a ‘socially awkward’ character and had left a WhatsApp group when an unflattering picture of him was used as the group icon image.

Challenging the first officer about her claim that he had rubbed his groin on her bottom, she said: “I just knew from how everyone positioned in that scenario and where the voices were coming from.”

Mr Ladenberg said: "I'm putting it to you that it didn't happen."

She replied: "I know what happened."

He asked: "You don't think it was just your perception that it was the officer."

She replied: "I knew where he was and when I felt that, I knew what had happened."

A second woman told the panel how the trainee officer made a number of sexual comments towards her including saying he was 'f****** punching' above his weight when asked to do a domestic violence role play during a training exercise.

Under cross examination from the accused's legal counsel, the woman accepted that most of the comments on their own were not cause for concern but coroberated the allegations made by another trainee officer.

A third trainee is expected to give evidence tomorrow via videolink.

The hearing continues.
