Emergency services were called to a stretch of riverbank in Stanhope yesterday morning following reports of a man's body being found.
Durham Police has confirmed a man tragically died at the scene early yesterday morning.
A spokeswoman for Durham Police said: “Police were called to reports of body found near the River Wear, in Stanhope, at around 6.30am yesterday morning (November 17).
“Sadly, the man was confirmed deceased at the scene.
“The death is not believed to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The ambulance service was also on the scene, a spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 06:33am to an incident in the Stanhope area. We sent three emergency ambulances, one clinical team leader and one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team.”
