A councillor has told of his horror after a freezer full of dead pigeons was abandoned in a back alley.
Concerned residents alerted Darlington Council after discovering the fly-tipped chest freezer with several dead woodpigeons inside.
The shocking discovery was found at the rear of Roseberry Street and Greenbank Road near the town centre and is believed to have been dumped between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
Council officers are now appealing for any residents with information to come forward.
A statement read: “Does anyone have any information? Did anyone see them being dumped?
“Has anyone been offered the birds – restaurants or pubs?
“Has anyone employed any pest control recently?”
Councillor Mike Renton, cabinet member for stronger communities, added: “It really is quite horrifying that anyone could do such a thing, and we are determined to catch those responsible and prosecute them.
“We would urge anyone with any information to let us know. Anything you tell us will be treated with absolute discretion, but we need your help to put a stop to this!”
