Remembrance services in Darlington have been revealed ahead of a weekend of events.

A Remebrance Sunday service in Darlington’s Holy Trinity Church, Woodland Road, will start at 10am, led by the Rev James Harvey.

The service will be followed by a procession from the church to the Cenotaph in the grounds of Darlington Memorial Hospital. An act of remembrance will be held, including the Last Post, two minutes silence and the laying of wreaths.

The Mayor Cllr Anne-Marie Curry will also lead a one minute silence on High Row at 11am on Remembrance Day, Friday 11 November.

The church service on Remembrance Sunday will also include a dedication of new Standards for The Royal Signals Association – Darlington Branch and the Darlington Branch of the Royal Navy Association.

The branch was formed in 1936, but little is known of its history prior to the end of World War Two. It started meeting again in October 1945 at the Drill Hall in Larchfield Street, at the invitation of 50 (N) Signal Regiment (TA). It moved in 1967, when the new TA & VR Drill Hall opened in Neasham Road (now the Army Reserve Centre) and the 50 (N) Signal Squadron offered its venue for branch meetings, which are still held there now.

The branch committee purchased a new Standard two years ago, but due to Covid restrictions it was not dedicated in church until now. The branch has offered its sincere thanks to Rev Harvey and Darlington Borough Council in supporting its dedication during this year’s Remembrance Sunday service and thanks the Officer Commanding of 50 (N) Signal Squadron for allowing members to hold their meetings and social functions at the Army Reserve Centre.
