A Darlington restaurant has been raided by immigration officials and one person was arrested.
Home Office Immigration Enforcement Officers swooped on the Rose and Lime Indian Restaurant on Bondgate last night (Friday, October 28) after receiving information about staff potentially working at the venue illegally.
Officers arrested a 51-year-old Bangladeshi man who had overstayed his visa and had no permission to work.
He has been detained and will be dealt with according to immigration rules.
The business owner now faces a potential fine of £20,000 for employing someone without the right to work.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “The government is tackling illegal immigration and the harm it causes by removing those with no right to be in the UK.
"We continue to work with law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal migration in all its forms.
“Our Nationality and Borders Act will fix the broken system; making it fair to those in genuine need and firm on those who seek to abuse it.”
