Fire crews battled a huge blaze at a County Durham pizza shop late on Monday (October 24) evening.

Dramatic pictures show plumes of smoke coming from the ‘Pizza Time’ restaurant on Darlington Road in Ferryhill after a fire broke out at the takeaway.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 9.30pm on Monday evening and fire crews remained at the property into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Northern Echo understands the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “Reports of a fire at a Pizza Shop on Darlington Road in Ferryhill came into CDDFRS control just after 9:30pm on Monday the 24th of October.

“Four appliances from Spennymoor, Durham, Darlington and both Ariel Ladder Platforms were in attendance. To extinguish the fire, they deployed six firefighters in Breathing Apparatus and used high pressure hose reels.

“Fire crews then left the scene at 6:40am. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Durham Police, whose Ferryhill station backs onto the Pizza Time takeaway, added that the fire is believed to have been accidental.

A force spokesperson told The Northern Echo: “Police were called at 9.50pm on Monday to assist with road closures following a fire at a takeaway in Darlington Road, Ferryhill.”
