A popular County Durham tearoom has gone up for sale after its owner has decided to hang up her apron after ten years at the helm.

Nestled alongside the historic cathedral in Durham City, on Elvet Bridge, Tealicious and its owner Alison Harnett has built up a reputation among regulars and tourists for its choice of teas, cakes, and other refreshments – but she is now stepping away from her beloved business.

This is highlighted in the fact that Tealicious is rated number one in tearooms in Durham City.

After making the decision to sell up, Tealicious is now on the market for £50,000 with Christie & Co, with Alison explaining: “After having ten extremely happy and fulfilling years running Tealicious it is now time to hang up my apron due to family circumstances changing.

“We chose Christie’s because of their expertise in the hospitality business, and feel they were the best company to find us the most suitable new owner for Tealicious.”

The business already runs a successful loose-leaf delivery service, as well as an order and collection service for cakes, picnics and afternoon teas. It also offers brunch and pastries made in-house.

It will comfortably seat 20 guests in the light and airy dining area and eight outside to enjoy the city’s beautiful architecture - with customers regularly giving five-star feedback in online reviews.

“Tealicious is an excellent opportunity for an owner-operator to take over this long-established and extremely popular business in what is a fantastic location in Durham’s historic city centre,” said Marslie McGregor, business agent at Christie & Co, who is handling the sale.

“With a great reputation and repeat and new customers, the current owners leave behind a solid foundation for an incoming operator to build on. I look forward to working with Alison in finding a buyer and helping her to achieve her retirement goal.”
