A person has been cut from a car and two people taken to hospital following a serious crash on the A19 on Sunday (October 16) afternoon.

There were major delays on the main road near Wolviston and Billingham on Sunday as emergency services were called to reports of a crash on the southbound carriageway.

There was a heavy emergency service presence as police, ambulance and fire crews all attended the scene.

One person was cut from a vehicle by Cleveland Fire Brigade and two people were taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A19 southbound shortly after 4.30pm this afternoon.

"Two passing scheduled care crews stopped to help prior to the arrival of two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader and a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team. Two patients have been taken to North Tees Hospital for further treatment."

Cleveland Fire Brigade previously confirmed that three engines had been sent to the scene, from stations in Hartlepool and Stockton.

The road reopened around 6.30pm with traffic starting to return to normal following delays.
