Some petrol stations across the North East are selling fuel for as cheap as 151.1p per litre, as petrol and diesel prices continue to fall across the region.

As homeowners battle the cost-of-living crisis, which has seen energy costs, product costs and everyday prices rise to an all-time high, people are looking for cost-effective tips to try and save money this winter.

Despite petrol and diesel prices seeing a high of over £2 per litre at certain fuel stations earlier this year, the cost of filling up cars has significantly reduced at the end part of 2022.

In an attempt to try and find the best petrol and diesel prices, motorists have been flocking to petrolprices.com to try and compare how much they will be charged at each fuel station to fill up.

In the North East, some petrol station has slashed their prices to such a level that some garages are offering petrol at 151.1p, while the average price in the region for petrol has fallen to around 158.6p, and diesel to around 172.2p.

According to petrolprices.com, the Jet garage on the B6282 at Etherley Moor is currently charging 151.1p per litre for petrol and 172.7p per litre for diesel.

Meanwhile, ASDA at Bishop Auckland is second cheapest, and are selling petrol for 153.0p per litre, and 172.7p per litre for diesel.

Here is a break down of the cheapest petrol stations across the North East:

  • Costco Gateshead: petrol – 150.7p, diesel: 173.7p
  • Jet B6268 (Etherley Moor) – petrol: 151.1p, diesel: 172.7p
  • ASDA Bishop Auckland – petrol: 153.0p, diesel: 172.7p
  • Shell A690 – petrol: 155.9p, diesel: 182.9p

The fall in fuel prices comes after new analysis suggested that drivers are being denied a further 10p cut in petrol prices due to major retailers hiking profit margins.

The RAC said the average price of a litre of fuel in the UK fell by nearly 7p to 162.9p in September as oil prices plummeted.

This was the sixth biggest monthly drop in average petrol prices since 2000 but the cut should have been deeper, the motoring services company claimed.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Drivers really should have seen a far bigger drop as the wholesale price of delivered petrol was around 120p for the whole month.

“This means forecourts across the country should have been displaying prices around 152p given the long-term margin on unleaded is 7p a litre.

“In stark contrast to this, RAC Fuel Watch data has shown margins to be around 17p a litre – a huge 10p more than normal.”

Supermarkets normally charge around 3.5p per litre less than the UK average but are currently only around 1.5p cheaper.

Mr Williams noted that Morrisons is offering discounted fuel for customers who spend a certain amount of money in store.

This is a type of promotion which “tends only to be seen when supermarkets are benefitting from lower wholesale prices”, he explained.

He urged drivers to “shop around for the best deals” rather than “simply assuming” supermarkets are the cheapest fuel retailers because they have been in the past.

The average price of a litre of diesel fell by 3.5p to 180.2p last month.
