A beachfront seating area has been severely damaged by fire.

Emergency services were called the seafront at Redcar just after 6pm this evening.

The wooden seating area was alight and most of it has been damaged by the fire.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “We were called to a report of a seating area alight.

“One crew from Redcar attended. They put a stop message in at 6.25pm.

“There were two hose reel jets used and there was 80 per cent damage to a seating area.

“It is a big wooden seating area. It is a shame, they are nice down there.”

Following the serious incident, Cleveland Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident. 

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Enquiries are underway after police were notified just before 7pm last night (Monday 10th October) that a covered seating area on Redcar seafront had been deliberately set on fire.

"We are working with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to identify those responsible and we would ask anyone with information/dashcam or CCTV which could assist on-going enquiries to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting ref 182093."
