A man accused of murdering a two-year-old girl at her home is expected to go on trial next year.
Michael Daymond is charged with killing Maya Louise Chappell following an incident at her east Durham home last week.
The 26-year-old was initially arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to cause serious harm but was charged with murder on Thursday, October 6.
He spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth when he made his first appearance at Teesside Crown Court.
The bearded defendant appreared via videolink from HMP Leeds wearing a grey, prison issue tracksuit.
Maya was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after emergency services responded to reports of a medical incident at Milton Grove, Shotton Colliery.

The toddler spent two days in intensive care at the RVI in Newcastle before passing away.
Jolyon Perks, prosecuting, told the judge that a number of medical reports would need to be compiled by experts for both the Crown Prosecution Service and the defendant's legal team.
Judge Howard Crowson remanded Daymond in custody until his next scheduled appearance in January next year when it is expected that he will enter a plea to the charge of murder.
Last week, a moving and emotional candlelit vigil was held for the two-year-old, the much-loved toddler who died tragically a week ago.
Family and friends gathered at Consett Football Club on Friday evening, still coming to terms with the reality her sad death is the subject of a murder inquiry.
Daymond is expected to go on trial in March next year.
