The Northern Echo:

There are reports on social media that someone has been stabbed, but these have not been confirmed.

Locals at the scene also told The Northern Echo a victim had been attacked this afternoon, but this has also not been confirmed.

The Northern Echo:

The confrontation, involving two men, believed to be local to the area, was said to have happened outside William Hill Bookmakers in The Avenue, in Deneside, Seaham, this afternoon.

The casualty was said to have been left with injuries on the footpath outside the premises, before the alleged attacker fled the scene.

Ambulance vehicles attended and the casualty was given immediate assistance at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Police, from the nearby Seaham station, were soon at the scene and taped off the parade of shops in the middle of the Avenue, while inquiries began.

The cordoned off area outside the shops remained in place into the evening.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman told The Northern Echo: "We got a call at 3.30pm from the police to attend an incident on The Avenue, in Seaham.

"We dispatched one paramedic ambulance and treated a patient for injuries to their head and hands before taking them to hospital."

The spokesman said he was not in a position to comment on the condition of the patient.

A woman living nearby said police were at the scene when she arrived home in mid-afternoon.

She said there had been some local speculation as to the identities of those involved in the incident, but she could not say who they were.

Durham Constabulary tonight issued a statement, appealing for information: "Police were called just after 3.25pm today following reports of a disturbance on The Avenue, in Seaham, involving two males.
