A couple became engaged in a popular Darlington restaurant last night, leading us to believe curry really is the food of love.

The surprising event occurred while the two were dining at Indian restaurant, Akbar The Great, on Bondgate in Darlington.

The beautiful and grand interior provided the perfect backdrop for Carl to pop the question to Susan.

Pictures of the happy couple were posted on Akbar’s Facebook account racking up more than 200 likes.

Abu Raihan, front of house manager, said: “I don’t remember them coming in before but it’s nice that they chose our restaurant.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone propose in our restaurant before so it was good to see.”
