Fans of Newcastle’s popular shipping container venue STACK were left devastated when the busy spot was forced to close in May of this year.

Thousands of people descended on the venue for the final weekend over the late May Bank Holiday after it was forced to close to make way for new HMRC offices in Newcastle’s City Centre.

But after it was announced that bosses at the venue are planning to make a glorious return to the city, new pictures have revealed where the shipping containers have been stored since the Pilgrim Street site was dismantled in the summer.

The pictures show the once-bustling containers piled up in storage behind the venue’s sister site in Sunderland.

The grey containers can be seen sitting unused on a plot of land next to the Sunderland STACK, which opened in September 2020, at the height of the Covid pandemic.

One eyewitness who spotted the containers behind the Seaburn venue told The Northern Echo: “I spotted them and wondered why they were a different colour, then I realised it was where they’re storing the Newcastle Stack.”

The popular venue was forced to close in May to make way for a new HMRC office block being built on its former site where the city’s ODEON cinema once stood.

Back in July plans were announced for a new venue Stack-like on Pilgrim Street at the Worswick Chambers building which could open in Summer 2023, but it is not yet clear whether these are the same plans being teased by the owners.

Anson House 9 Ltd, which is led by former Stack boss Neil Winch, secured a licence for the new Pilgrim Street venue after a council hearing in July, despite complaints that Stack has been a “nightmare” for its neighbours.
