Plans have been unveiled for extensive repairs and reconstruction of a historic building within the grounds of Durham Cathedral.

An application has been submitted to Durham County Council for fabric repairs to external elevations including reconstruction, stone replacement, indents and repointing, dismantle battlemented parapet, installation of damp proof course and reconstruction of existing stone, to a block.

A heritage statement has been prepared by Mosedale Gillatt Architects to accompany an application for listed building consent for external repair works to 12-14 The College, within the grounds of Durham Cathedral.

12–14 The College is located on the western edge of The College, immediately behind Durham Cathedral and facing onto the river to the West.

The block currently provides accommodation for Cathedral residents.

The proposed works comprise external repairs to roof, parapet, stonework, render, windows and rainwater goods.

The project’s overarching aim is to carry out a series of urgent repairs and fabric upgrades in order to prevent further deterioration of the historic asset and keep the building structurally sound and water tight.
