The North Yorkshire Moors Railway's (NYMR) popular Steam Gala returns this week with visitors able to see some iconic locos across the four-day event.

The gala opens tomorrow (Thursday September 22) and train enthusiasts are in for a treat thanks to a host of iconic locos taking part in the event.

Fans of the 'Sir Nigel Gresley' No. 4498 (60007) will be pleased to see the loco return to the NYMR after a seven-year restoration project.

Fittingly, 2022 marks 85-years since the loco first entered service in November 1937 and visitors to the Steam Gala will be able to see this stunning piece of locomotive history up close.

It will be joined by the BR Standard 5 No. 73156 which visits the gala courtesy of the Great Central Railway in Loughborough.

It is only one of five surviving Standard Class 5 locomotives from the 172 originally built by British Railways Workshops between 1951 and 1956.

Another visiting loco is the No. 85 Taff Vale Railway Class 02, courtesy of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in Haworth.

Originally built for service in the Welsh Valleys north of Cardiff, No. 85 was deemed surplus to requirements at the time of the grouping in 1923 and was withdrawn by the Great Western Railway in 1927.

In 1929, now numbered 426, it made the long journey north to the Durham coalfields where it remained in service, as NCB No. 52, until 1968.

The visiting locos will join the NYMR's own nine-strong fleet of home locos due on display at the gala subject to their availability.

Other attractions throughout the event include trade stalls at Pickering Station including DPP Model Railways, Yorkshire Wolds Railway, Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust, and The Gresley Society.

There will be a meet the author event with Chris Vine, author of the Peter's Railway series of books, at Pickering Station from 10am on the Saturday and Sunday.

At Levisham Station there will be a Miniature Stationary Agricultural Engine Display with up to 20 static engines on display, along with the annual Steam Gala Beer Festival at both Levisham and Goathland stations, offering a selection of real ales from local breweries.

Meanwhile at Grosmont Station, visitors can enjoy a Model Railway Layout of Goathland in 00 gauge alongside the No. 3672 Dame Vera Lynn fundraising team stand.

The Shed Shop will also be at Grosmont boasting a large range of Hornby, Bachmann and Dapol model railway items, some often at less normal retail price.

The gala runs from Thursday 22 to Sunday September 25 from 9am each day and tickets can be booked via the NYMR website.
