One lane of the A1 in the North East is shut due to a crash and spillage in Gateshead near Team Valley.
It happened on the A1 southbound between the A184 and the junction with the A692 at around 8.15pm.
It affected traffic from J69, the A184 Dunston Interchange and initially two lanes were closed southbound.
National Highways says that one lane is still shut and traffic is moving slowly in the area.
The authority says normal traffic conditions aren't expected to return until between 3.30pm and 3.45pm this afternoon.
