A North East shopping centre is mulling over plans to close its doors on the date of the Queen’s funeral amid growing pressure from the public.

Dalton Park Shopping Centre near Murton, near Seaham, has faced criticism online in recent days from loyal shoppers and residents.

It comes as dozens of retailers – and shopping centres across the UK - have announced their closure ahead of the state funeral on Monday, September 19.

Dalton Park Shopping Centre bosses have yet to confirm their plans, but a spokesperson confirmed that they are discussing it.

Rumours have been circulating online, suggesting that the retail park could open despite closures elsewhere in the North East.

On social media, one person said: “Is it just me that finds it disrespectful to both the Queen and all the staff who have to work and will be unable to pay their respects as they wish?”

Another said: “It’s disgusting that it’s open”

An employee working at Dalton Park said: "I work at Dalton Park, the shop is going to be closed and I'm not getting paid, its head office choice not Dalton Park."

The shopping centre houses over 65 stores including brands like M&S, Next, Adidas, Molton Brown and Radley.

Centre Manager at Dalton Park, Richard Kaye, said: “We are awaiting final confirmation from our brand partners before we can announce plans for Monday 19th September. An update will be released as soon as possible.”

Other shopping centres have also closed for the Queen's funeral such as McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in York.

Popular food chains Greggs and McDonald's have also announced they will be shutting their doors out of respect for the Queen.

Other retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl and Asda have confirmed they will also be shutting on Monday.
