A school has announced its immediate closure after flooding.
Staff at Whinfield Primary School are now carrying out a clean up operation to clear water throughout the building.
Pictures shared on social media show pools of water in several areas of the school.
A statement from the school read: "URGENT SCHOOL IS CLOSED TODAY
"Unfortunately the school building has flooded and we are unable to open.
"An update will follow."
The extent of the damage caused by the flooding is not yet known, however it is hoped the school will be able to reopen on Monday.
It is believed some teachers and school staff were unable to travel to the school on Friday morning due to the flooding.
It comes as several areas throughout the North East suffered flood damage, with some businesses forced to close.
Several roads in the region have temporarily closed to make way for a clean up operation.
The Met Office said the North East will experience more rain on Friday and it will be a "dull and cloudy day with outbreaks of rain, occasionally heavy and more prolonged in the north", but did not issue any immediate flood warnings.
