Newsquest’s Cash for Charities scheme has proved popular again this year as The Northern Echo has been inundated with nominations for charities.
The grant scheme is UK-wide but The Northern Echo is handling nominations from charities in our region.
We have been inundated so far with over 340 nominations from all over the North East.
We will be putting together a shortlist within the next week but we wanted to share a handful of charities that have been nominated.
From foodbanks to bunny rescue shelters, we’ve certainly had a large variety of charities nominated.

Here are just a few charities that have been nominated so far:
Rare Rockets is a charity helping young deaf people across the North East. This is done by making British Sign Language more accessible and supporting those through community life. It covers the whole North East and has two bases; one in Newton Aycliffe and another in Stockton.
Theatre Hullabaloo is a charity that makes, tours and promotes theatre. Based in Darlington, its aim is to bring theatre to more children by taking drama workshops and shows into schools in deprived areas.
The Angel Trust is a charity based in Bishop Auckland. Perhaps best known for its foodbank and community pantry that serves County Durham and Darlington, the charity also puts on cooking classes and events including its annual Ladies Day held at Hardwick Hall Hotel.
Northumbria Blood Bikes is made up of an army of volunteers who deliver blood and other urgent medical supplies out of hours between hospitals and other healthcare sites. It covers Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle Upon Tyne City, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland.
Bunny Burrows is based in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Set up in 1996 by Gwen Butler and her late husband, John, the animal charity mainly focuses on rabbits, guinea pigs and tortoises with ongoing health issues.
Between September 12 and 25 we will be drawing up a shortlist and as the charities that have applied/been nominated there is such variety that it will a hard choice.
Last year, charities that benefitted from the grant scheme included If U Care Share based in Chester-Le-Street, Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, based just outside of York.
