A NEW head teacher at a North-East primary school is planning to grow stronger links with the local community.
Clair Gooding has taken over at Skerne Park Academy, in Darlington, after devoting nearly 30 years to her previous primary school in Greater Manchester.
Mrs Gooding started her career as a nursery teacher at Newhey Community Primary School, in Rochdale, and rose through the ranks to become head teacher in 2010.
She has now moved to the North-East to be closer to family members who have moved to the region, and because she was looking for a new challenge.
James Keating, Executive Principal of the Hummersknott Multi-Academy Trust, which includes Skerne Park Academy, said: “We are delighted to welcome Clair, who brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and fantastic ideas to move the school forward, and enhance its position at the heart of the community.”
Mrs Gooding said: “The staff, governing body and the trust have been so supportive and welcoming, and the children are amazing.
“I look forward to working with all of the parents to make the school as much a part of the community as possible. I have an open-door policy, so my message is to come and talk to me and work alongside me.”
Chair of governors, Sarah Rose, added: “It’s so nice to see so many good things happening around the school. The children have come back full of enthusiasm from their summer holidays, and the head teacher brings great experience and bags of positivity.”
A new community garden, greenhouse and allotment project have been added to the school grounds during the summer, with the support of Darlington MP Peter Gibson, a host of local companies and volunteers.
