Shocking pictures taken by The Northern Echo shows heavy flooding in Darlington today following rain.

Cars can be seen kicking up small waves as they drive down Stanhope Road in the town, which has become heavily flooded.

One person can be seen pulling their jeans up to avoid them getting wet as they wade through the deep water.

It comes after heavy rain hit the region today as many braced themselves for thunderstorms.

The Met Office warned of heavy showers and a risk of hail and thunder as many experienced bouts of rain.

Further heavy rain, and sometimes thunder, is expected in the North East tonight, however things are set to ease in the early hours of the morning.

Variable cloud and sunny spells will permeate the day with further scattered showers throughout the day.

However, further heavy shower is expected and these could also be thundery at times, most likely during the afternoon.

Further warm and sunny weather is predicted, however, with a maximum temperature of 22c.
