Police have pledged to act against any crime or anti social behaviour as Middlesbrough host Sunderland at the Riverside stadium on Monday.

Ahead of what will be the first Tees-Wear derby in several years Cleveland Police have warned of large crowds around the ground and Middlesbrough town centre in the hours leading up to and after the match.

The force said it has worked closely with both North East teams to ensure there is a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone attending.

A statement from the force added: “The vast majority of people who attend football matches are genuine fans who simply want to enjoy the game with their families and friends. Police will be on hand to respond to any crime or antisocial behaviour.

“Anyone with information regarding disorder or criminality associated with football is asked to report to Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
