The price of filling up a tank of petrol has fallen slightly but remains high after months of motorists facing sky-high prices at the pumps.

The average cost of a litre of unleaded petrol was 169.8p on Wednesday (August 31), according to data from RAC Fuel Watch.

Meanwhile the price of diesel appears to have stagnated, with a litre costing on average 183.3p on Wednesday, and no further price drop forecast.

Last month The Northern Echo reported from the Jet Oakley petrol station in West Auckland which has been dubbed one of the cheapest in the region as they were forced to call in extra tankers as cars queues for the value fuel.

Prices have started falling over the last month-or-so after rates rocketed in June.

Here is a list of the cheapest fuel prices in County Durham and Darlington (as of September 1), according to price comparison website PetrolPrices:

County Durham

  • Sainsbury’s Durham – unleaded: 166.9, diesel: 180.9p
  • Shell A690 Nevilles Cross Bank – unleaded: 167.9p, diesel: 185.9p
  • BP Alma Place – unleaded: 167.9p, diesel: 185.9p
  • Shell Durham High Street – unleaded: 167.9p, diesel: 182.9p
  • ESSO Durham St Giles – unleaded: 168.9p, diesel: 185.9p
