A Stockton stag-do descended into violence when the groom’s brother fell over during karaoke and was brutally beaten by a pack of yobs.

According to the Cleveland Police logs, “people were fighting all over” during the midnight fracas, which left the stag with “black eyes, lumps, bumps and bruising”.

However, an investigation shows it was one of just a handful of police incidents involving stags and hens on Teesside since the start of 2021.

Details of the fracas, which unfolded in June 2021, emerged following Freedom of Information requests to police forces across the UK by the country’s leading stag and hen organiser, Last Night of Freedom.

In the Stockton incident, police vehicles raced to the bust-up, with logs showing the victim was “in no fit state” to give a statement.

And despite being knocked out himself, one of the suspects somehow “ran off” while being treated by paramedics, according to the police logs

Altogether, this FOI was part of Cleveland Police disclosing details of just four incidents involving stags and hens since the start of 2021.

Analysis of the logs shows half of those were breaches of covid laws that no longer exist – while the other incident involved two mates scrapping during a Redcar stag.

“Four incidents involving stags or hens in one-and-a-half years is a drop in the ocean when you consider how many incidents Cleveland Police deal with on any given weekend,” said Matt Mavir, manging director of Last Night of Freedom.

“In the Stockton incident, the victim was on the stag do and had seemingly done nothing to warrant what unfolded.

“And such a small number of instances shows the stereotype of stags and hens being drunken troublemakers couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Most people go on a stag or hen party at least once in their lifetime, and the overwhelming majority just want to have fun with their friends and share a special period in their mates’ life. Causing trouble is typically the last thing on their mind.”

Elsewhere, in Hartlepool, one unspecified business was reported in February 2021 for renting out suites during the height of lockdown, with a stag party present during the 999 call.

Later that summer, another venue in the town – a sports bar – was reported for flouting covid rules. As many as 50 people were said to be mingling inside with no masks or separation.
