Three people have been charged in connection with a violent incident that spilled on to the streets of Darlington and saw five people arrested for the incident.

Police were called to Westminster Road in the town at around 6.45pm on Tuesday (August 23) following reports of a ‘violent disturbance’ involving several males of varying ages.

After arriving on the scene, officers from Durham Police arrested five people.

Other details on the incident were scarce – apart from Detective Sergeant James Woodcock, from the East Neighbourhood Police Team, issuing a statement to calm residents, who were worried about future violence in that area of Darlington.

Initially issuing a statement, DS Woodcock said: “This incident occurred in a residential area and has caused understandable concern in the community.

“As a result, we have deployed additional patrols to the area to provide reassurance to local residents over the next few days.

“Officers are currently following several lines of enquiry in relation to the incident. We would urge anyone who witnessed the disturbance but has not yet spoken to us to get in touch and pass on any information they may have.”

Durham Police have now confirmed that three people have been charged with the incident.

Updating members of the public on Thursday (August 25) – the police force confirmed that three men, aged 42, 31, and 26, have been remanded in custody to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court charged with affray.

They also revealed that two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, who were arrested in connection with the incident have also been released under investigation.
