Fed up motorists have expressed their anger after a County Durham road was forced to close after it became blocked with mountains of fly-tipping – leaving some drivers stranded for over two hours.
People that chose to travel on the Black Boy Road near Great Lumley/Fencehouses at around 2pm on Tuesday (August 23) found their path blocked by furniture, boxes, and other rubbish items.
After reporting the issue to the police and Durham County Council – wardens from the local authority were called out to close off the road, before starting to remove the fly-tipping.

However, what started out as a simple task to collect rubbish turned into a two-hour clean-up – which meant that some were forced to sit in traffic queues for over two hours until the problem solved.
A spokesperson for Durham County Council’s warden posted on their social media page that “Neighbourhood Wardens currently had the road blocked in both directions at Black Boy Road near Great Lumley/Fencehouses after a vehicle has driven down the road tipping waste which has left the road impassable.
“Please avoid the area.”
The road was eventually reopened at 4pm.
Despite the potential hazard to drivers, this wasn’t the only location in County Durham that had to be closed on Tuesday (August 24) due top fly-tipping after another stretch of road in Great Lumley was shut for several hours after someone left a large amount of rubbish on a blind bend.
Following the sudden road closures, numerous people took to social media to vent their anger at the siaution, with one social media user not surprisied by the fly tipping by saying: “This is happening all the time along this stretch of road. I've reported it a few times.”
However, others were more angered by the ‘blatant’ fly-tipping, with one user writing: “What is wrong with people?” while another simply added: “Utter scumbags”.
