A caring Darlington barber who is looking to ease the cost-of-living crisis on families across the North East is offering free haircuts to children at the hairdresser where he works.

With people facing rising costs on energy bills, fuel, and everyday costs, saving money along the way has become vital for families right across the UK.

In the North East – this is no different, as some families choose between heating and eating.

To combat the cost-of-living crisis, ‘every day heroes’ in the community are aiming to ease that burden and offer their time and resources.

One of those ‘every day heroes’ in Darlington is Blaine Peat from Blind Pig Barbers & Bar, who is dedicating his time this week to cutting children’s hair for free in an attempt to save local families some money just before kids return to school.

Offering the free trims on Monday (August 22), Tuesday (August 23) and Thursday (August 25), the barber has already received several appointments for his free service.

While Mr Peat, who is a father himself, has offered the service in Darlington, he is gifting his expertise as part of UK-wide project to help underprivileged families, Kuts4Kids.

Launched in June this year by UK men’s grooming brand Dapper Dan, Kuts4Kids has already helped around 1000 young people in the UK through free haircuts.

Speaking about how he got involved in the initiative, Mr Peat, who has worked at Blind Pig Barbers for ten months, said: “I noticed it on Instagram and got in contact – they wanted me to hand over the details.

“It’s to ease the burden of the cost-of living crisis. It might be something small, it can mean a lot to families.

“I’ve already got a few appointments booked in for Tuesday and Thursday. I’m hoping that there will be more throughout the days I’m taking part.

“I have children myself and I know how hard it can be; any little thing can help.”

As part of the Kuts4Kids project, Blaine will be handing out the free hair cuts at Blind Pig Barbers on Grange Road, which has only been in Darlington for around a year and offers a unique and vintage approach to hairdressing.

Describing the barber shop, Mr Peat added: “It’s something that not a lot of places offer – we have a bar to the back where we offer free coffees and other drinks to customers with their hair cut.

“Fingers crossed we’ll get more free haircuts coming in throughout the next few days.”
