The Great North Run is a major event and momentous occasion that thousands have been training for in hopes to cross the finish line and walk away with one of the acclaimed medals. 

If you've ever taken part in the half marathon, then you'll know that there are certain things that only a runner will know.

From having a mix of nerves and excitement that can't be described to trying to get at least a high five from a local celeb to the feeling of seeing the Red Arrows fly across that is just indescribable. 

But for those of you that are new to it, you might want to find out what to expect from the run, based on previous competitors' own appearances.

25 things you only know if you've done the Great North Run

1. Waking up knowing that the day you've been training months for is finally here and having the weird mixed feeling of excitement, and dread whilst being emotional. 

2. Checking the weather app constantly to make sure you're ready and have the right choice of clothing.

3. Keeping breakfast small- sticking to just porridge, fruit, a bit of protein and some sweet treats. 

4. Having a pocket full of safety pins so you know you definitely have at least one left to pin your number on. 

5. Standing at the start line in a sea of runners ready to get going and to see that finish line. 

6. Sprinting from the start line thinking you're an Olympic athlete until you get to Tyne Bridge and you've already worn yourself out. 

7. Seeing a banana, Spongebob Squarepants, Stormtroopers and trying to make it to the finish line before them, but still being beaten.

8. Feeling like a celebrity as you high-five every kid that holds out their hand.

9. Taking off your old hoodie and leaving it at the start line knowing that it's probably the last time you'll ever see it.

10. Hearing and screaming oggy, oggy, oggy as you take on the first underpass. 

11. Hearing the Red Arrows before you see them and having that excited anticipation in the pit of your stomach. 

12. Then finally seeing the Red Arrows as they fly over the Tyne Bridge and holding back the tears. 

13. Running past former professional athletes and celebs knowing that will be your new party story. 

14. Spotting the celebs of the Telly but not knowing their names and spending the next ten minutes trying to pin a name to the famous face. 

15. Getting handed a bottle of water and an ice pop as you try your best to keep running and enjoy the refreshing drink and snack. 

16. Having that feeling of a community behind you as thousands cheer you on to make it to the finish line.

17. Reading the shirts around you feeling humbled when you see messages like 'for dad' and realise how much the race means for so many. 

18. Coming down that hill everyone dreads before seeing that blue sea and knowing it's not long to go. 

19. The last mile feels like a marathon itself.

20. Seeing the thousands upon thousands of people supporting around the finish line as you get closer and closer to the end. 

21. Finally crossing that line and feeling so many emotions of just happiness, exhaustion, celebration, elation and pure relief. 

22. Heading over to see your family and holding back the tears as they embrace you. 

23. Enjoying that first pint and knowing that no other pint will ever taste so good. 

24. Releasing you have just run in the biggest half marathon in the world and are surrounded by some amazing people.

25. And lastly, wanting to feel all those feelings again and debate going for it again next year.
