A road is closed due to a crash on the A689, between Stanhope and Eastgate, just before the Rookhope turn off this morning.
According to the AA Traffic map, the crash was "serious" and involved two vehicles.
The incident is thought to have occurred at approximately 7:30am today.
There is queueing traffic on A689 both ways from Rookhope turn off to Eastgate Village Hall turn off.
One Facebook-user described the crash as the "worst crash (he'd) ever seen."
Durham Police has been approached fo comment.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A689 between Eastgate and Stanhope shortly after 7.30am this morning.
"We dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken by road to University Hospital of North Durham."
