This is the amazing view down onto the remains of the Sports Direct superstore in the centre of Darlington.

These pictures were taken from the roof of the East Street car park above Wilkos - and now show a new view right across to the Cornmill Car Park.

Darlington Borough Council, which bought the site last year after plans to turn the building into a gym fell through, is now clearing it for future regeneration.

Plans are yet to be submitted for housing on the site - a former club and bowling alley - but the council says it has had interest from a number of developers.

A council spokesperson said more plans would be revealed soon.

“Demolition is almost complete and the site will be made ready for future development. We have a number of potential investors showing an interest in this key site, which will sit opposite the new Darlington Economic Campus headquarters.”

Earlier in the project they had told us:  “The site has been earmarked for quality residential development. Any development will look to capitalise on the town centre location and will include green space and links to active travel for walkers and cyclists.”

Work has been underway there since May, with bulldozers moving onto the site in June, and clearance work is now almost complete .

The warehouse in Darlington has been vacant for some time and has been an eyesore for several years.

Councillor Jonathan Dulston, leader of the council, had previously told us: “Major work is ongoing at the moment as we completely demolish the old building. It’s been a massive eyesore for the town for the last couple of years.

“We were successful in purchasing it  as a council which is fantastic for our future ambitions for making this area of town a success.”

He added; “The good news is we’re getting this site ready for investment and we have had loads of people contact the council interested in coming to Darlington and investing in us.”

This is what the site looks like now:
