A man has been named by his heartbroken family after suffering a "medical emergency" at the wheel, leading to a crash.

Jeffrey Palmer, 59, from New Marske died in hospital after the crash on Kirkleatham Lane in Redcar on Saturday.

The incident, which was reported at around 11.50am, had seen his car leave the road as the emergency services carried out first aid at the scene.

But in a tragic statement on Sunday morning, his family paid tribute as they released an image of the beloved step-dad, brother, uncle and grandad.

Mr Palmer’s family said: “Jeffrey was a devoted family man, a step-father, brother, uncle and grandfather. We are all devastated by his sudden death.

“We are grieving as a family and ask for privacy at this terrible time.”

The road was closed for several hours between Hambleton Avenue and West Dyke Road.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson previously said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Kirkleatham lane in Redcar shortly before 12noon today.

We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader and an officer, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken by road to James Cook Hospital."
