A guide has revealed the top three railway destinations to travel to from the North East this summer - and it includes one at the top of the country.

LNER has named a trio of tantalising locations that revellers just cannot miss as millions are set to take up holidays abroad.

The railway operator, which runs services between Scotland, the North East and London, has come up with its list as part of its latest and second, Green Guide.

It comes just days after the UK experienced soaring temperatures amid the heatwave, prompting fresh concerns over climate change.

And by releasing this guide, LNER is hoping to encourage people to take up railway travel as a means to holiday - while reducing the impact on the environment.

According to the "Green Guide 2022", the following destinations are some of the top destinations when it comes to getting a summer getaway - and being eco-friendly.

- Inverness, Scotland

- Lincoln, England

- Harrogate, England

All are accessible via LNER services in the North East with one direct service to Inverness in each direction per day.

Meanwhile, customers can get to Lincoln and Harrogate from the North East and North Yorkshire with just one change.

David Horne, Managing Director at LNER, said: “This summer is set to be huge for domestic travel, so we’re delighted to be launching the second version of our popular Green Guide to help people wanting to make more responsible travel choices.

"Our research shows half of British adults want to learn more about how to be a sustainable traveller, so the Green Guide is aimed at providing a wide range of inspiration on how to do this on the LNER route."

“Whether it’s Lincoln Cathedral with its exterior recently revealed after nearly 40 years, or the Highland Food and Drink Trail in Inverness, we’re seeing people from all around the world flocking to our destinations to seek out increasingly popular local experiences.

"This is becoming very important to the kind of traveller who wants to spend their money on authentic regional experiences, as well as taking the time to use the journey to switch off.”

According to LNER, the Green Guide has been curated using tips and advice from LNER colleagues local to the destinations as well as with support from Visit Harrogate, Visit Inverness Loch Ness and Visit Lincolnshire.

The Guide is available on www.lner.co.uk/greenguides as well as in LNER’s travel centres at stations along the East Coast route.
