It has been just over a week since the North East was rocked by a record-breaking heatwave – but could the region be in for another heatwave this weekend? Here’s what the Met Office has said.
Last week’s heatwave brought with it temperatures as high as 38c and many were left sweltering in the scorching temperatures.
The week so far has been mostly settled when it comes to the weather, with the North East seeing temperatures average for the season.
However, what’s the weather like for the rest of the week and could we be in for another heatwave this weekend?
What’s the weather like this weekend?
Looking ahead into Friday, the weekend kicks off with light rain and some sunny spells, continuing into a more unsettled weekend with further patchy rain and drizzle.

Sunday is set to see further heavy rain with strong winds, although, despite this, temperatures will be around average during the period.
In Darlington, Saturday is set to be a mostly rainy day with temperatures reaching a high of 22c by mid-afternoon.
That trend continues in Durham where temperatures are set to reach highs of 23c with a backdrop of rain for most of the day.
In Newton Aycliffe, it is much the same, with a high chance of rain for much of the day and highs of 22c.
Another record-breaking heatwave is, therefore, unlikely to be on the cards this week.
What’s the weather like tomorrow?
Heavy showers that will fall on many today will continue into Thursday and gradually become more confined to more northern areas of the region throughout the day.
It will stay cloudy, however, with some isolated showers during the evening and overnight.

In Darlington, the day will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers throughout the afternoon and a high of 18c.
In Durham, the picture is much the same, with rain being more likely and a high of 18c again.
