The A1(M) was partially closed in both directions after a Mercedes lost control and collided with the central reservation near Washington.

Emergency services were called to junction 64 of the major A-road at around 3.15pm on Monday (July 25) after reports of a single-vehicle collision.

It's understood that two lanes of the southbound carriageway and one lane of the northbound carriageway had to be closed to allow the police to work on the vehicle.

"It was reported a Mercedes travelling south has collided with the central reservation, blocked traffic on both sides of the carriageway."

The North East Ambulance Service hasn't commented on the condition of the driver of the Mercedes, but Northumbria Police confirmed that no major injuries were sustained in the A1(M) crash.

The spokesperson continued: "No one is thought to have sustained any injuries, but motorists are asked to avoid the area while emergency services are in attendance and the debris is cleaned.”
