Staff at one of Britain’s biggest supermarkets are receiving their second pay rise this year as people continue to struggle with the cost of living.

Budget supermarket Aldi is giving staff at its Durham stores their second pay increase this year, upping their wages by 40p an hour.

It means the minimum wage for staff at the popular supermarket will now be £10.50 an hour, making Aldi the country’s best paying supermarket.

The new pay rates go beyond the legal minimum wage for over 23s of £9.50 an hour, and the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended real living wage of £9.90 an hour.

Aldi, famous for its middle aisle, is also the only supermarket to offer their staff paid breaks, which for the average store assistant is now worth more than £830 a year.

And those working in London will earn even more, with a minimum of £11.95 an hour.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our new rates of pay maintain Aldi’s position as the UK’s highest paying supermarket.
